Tests and Procedures That May Be Performed During Your Eye Exam

A refraction exam is an essential part of evaluating your eyes and vision. The two main vision problems caused by refraction issues are nearsightedness (difficulty seeing things far away) and farsightedness (difficulty seeing things up close). So during this test, our optometrist may shine a light into your eyes to observe how the light bends inside them. They might also use a computerized test to assess your refraction. With refraction tests, our goal is to help you get the clearest vision by trying different lenses until we find the perfect one for you.

Even when you're focused on something in front of you, your eyes can still pick up objects around it – that’s peripheral vision. To assess the quality of your peripheral vision, we will ask you to concentrate on an object right in front of you, like a pen. Then, we’ll ask about what you can see on the sides or slightly away from that object. This test helps determine if there's any loss of peripheral vision, which could be a sign of various eye diseases like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Digital retinal imaging is a technology that helps the eye doctor examine the health of your retina, which is at the back of your eye. They use a special digital camera to take a picture of your retina. Your visual field is the area that you see while looking at a specific object. For example, when you look at a car, your eyes are focused on it, but you may also see things that surround the car, such as flowers on the ground or rain falling on the windshield. A visual field test examines your ability to see what is in this direct area.
